Welcome
YOUNG NATURALISTS' CLUB - NORTH OKANAGAN (VERNON)
Young Naturalists’ Club 2010 UpdateIn June, Linda Kennedy was kind enough to present a session on Noxious Weeds for us in Kal Park. The weather was great and the event was well attended. One of our very youngest kids accurately identified a Cinquefoil on a later hike in August, attesting to Linda's superior teaching skills!
In July, we had a scavenger hunt, hike and swim in BX Creek. This is a favourite for the kids. Several of them were able to accurately identify all 20 plants and nature items on their lists!
In August, we planned an "advanced" hike in toward Spectrum Lake, with Aaron Deans from the bird sanctuary leading the trip. Although we had only two kids come along, they were among the most keen of the group and their time with Aaron was invaluable, identifying many growing things not found in other eco-systems . We finished with a short walk to the waterfall.
Our September event was the much-loved excursion to the Stockdale's organic farm. Judy and Peter put on a wonderful afternoon for the kids. They tasted and smelled various herbs, berries and teas, toured the farm and watched the sheep dogs perform. We finished with a relaxed wiener roast by the firepit.
In October, we went to the Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary where Aaron again put on a great afternoon for the kids. They saw a short video on birds common to the sanctuary, had a scavenger hunt on the grounds, and watched geese through a telescope on the dock.
We now have eighteen active families involved with YNC!
Many thanks to all who have assisted Joan Cooke and myself with the Young Naturalists. Here is my e mail address for anyone who would like to volunteer their expertise in ANYTHING related to nature!!
